Third Party System (1854-1890): Democrats vs. Republicans During this period, the organization of political parties in the United States gradually matured, and the people’s loyalty and participation in political parties increased. The issue of race is the biggest issue in the country and the biggest point of disagreement between the two parties. The Republicans and Democrats familiar to modern people have emerged, but the meaning of bipartisan support is very different than it is now.
During the American Revolutionary War, slavery had been gradually abolished in the northern colonies, but the South's revolutionary fathers still supported photo background removing the system because the southern manor economy was so reliant on cheap labor. The two factions were at a stalemate from writing the Declaration of Independence, to the formulation of the constitution, to the Civil War, and they continued to accumulate dissatisfaction in the process of compromise. At the 1787 Constituent Convention, Southern delegates were reluctant to agree to the emancipation of slaves in the Constitution. The Northern representatives instead proposed that the number of state members of the House of Representatives should be calculated in proportion to the population of free men, while the Southern representatives demanded that the entire slave population should be counted, even though black slaves had no right to vote.
If it does not comply with the demands of the South, it will withdraw from the Constituent Assembly (basically withdraw from the United States). In the end, the North and the South compromised, and the black slaves accounted for three-fifths of the population. This compromise greatly strengthened the southern slave states' advantage in Congress. Although the Constitution stipulates that the Federation has no right to block the international slave trade, by 1808, the importing of slaves has been strictly prohibited in various states of the United States, and the southern slave states must rely on the local black slaves to reproduce on their own.
