The purpose of this literature review is to explore the methods that course designers have used to incorporate cultural competency into course design at colleges and universities to think holistically of all learners such as learners with different abilities and learners from different cultures. The research used in this review can be broadly categorized into these three categories: how cultural competency is defined for inclusion in virtual classrooms, how institutions have incorporated cultural competency in the curriculum of online classrooms and the impact of cultural competency design inclusion in online classrooms. For the purposes of this paper, we will use the term ‘cultural competency’ however the research review also referenced the following synonymous terms: cultural inclusivity, cultural competence and inclusive design principles.
